Compressed Natural Gas Fueling Station

Opens at The Yellow Cab Company

in Bloomfield for Public, CNG-powered Taxi Fleet Opening Will Feature New CNG-powered Wheelchair-friendly Taxis

BLOOMFIELD, CT—(DECEMBER 9, 2011) A ribbon-cutting ceremony at 2:00 p.m. today at The Yellow Cab Company’s Bloomfield headquarters will celebrate Hartford County’s first public access compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling station, built and operated by Clean Energy. On hand for the ribbon-cutting ceremony will be Congressman John Larson; Senator Richard Blumenthal; Bloomfield Mayor Sydney Sheldon; CT House Majority Leader Brendan Sharkey; Tony Guererra, Connecticut House Representative and Co-Chair of the Transportation Committee;  Mike Scarpino, Clean Cities Regional Manager, U.S. Department of Energy National Energy Technology Laboratory; and Connecticut Clean Cities Future Fuels Project (CTCCFF) visionaries including The Yellow Cab Company and Clean Energy.

“As the company celebrates its 90th anniversary  of the first taxi license granted in the State of Connecticut, we are re-positioning our legacy to lead Connecticut’s clean energy solution in the transportation sector,” according to company president Marco Henry.   An award-winning, innovative leader in the taxi business, The Yellow Cab Company’s Henry pioneered green taxi fleet technology in 1998. He was the first taxi fleet owner in the nation to convert Honda Civics to CNG through a federal/DOE Clean Cities grant.

As Henry celebrates a 20-year milestone as the company’s president, he looks to the future with promise. In addition to the CNG Honda Civics and CNG Ford Transit Connects he welcomes to his service fleet, Henry will soon provide Greater Hartford’s first wheelchair-accessible taxi rides. The company will debut a fleet of purpose- built, wheelchair- friendly, ADA compliant, low emission taxis known as the “MV-1” ready to serve the Disability Community.

“Universally accessible 24-hour, on-demand, alternative fuel transport can and should play a strategic role in building the transportation infrastructure of Connecticut. Our CNG-powered taxis will reduce overhead fuel costs, significantly lessen harmful emissions for the environment and reduce our overall dependency on foreign oil,” Henry added.

The new fuel station will serve anyone in the public operating a CNG vehicle. By year’s end, The Yellow Cab Company will deploy 110 new CNG taxis as part of this ambitious project.

“As the price of gasoline continues to hover above $3 per gallon throughout our state, I want to congratulate Yellow Cab for their progressive decision to embrace natural gas as an alternative fuel for their fleet,” Congressman Larson said. “Natural gas is affordable, abundant and American and could hold the key to breaking our dependence on foreign oil. I am very excited to see another fueling station open up in our state and look forward to more companies following the lead of Yellow Cab and taking a serious look at natural gas in the future.”

“By 2012 the Yellow Cab CNG fleet is expected to displace about a half-million gallons of gasoline per year, and the environmental gains will only go up from there,” according to Lee Grannis Coordinator of the Greater New Haven Clean Cities Coalition and recipient of the USDOE grant.  That equates to about 10 million pounds of Carbon Dioxide, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. In addition, replacing 110 gasoline taxicabs with new clean-burning CNG cabs will remove more than 2,500 tons of greenhouse gases annually.

Clean Energy built the new station at The Yellow Cab Company‘s fleet facility at 86 Granby Road in Bloomfield as part of the Connecticut Clean Cities Future Fuels Project (CTCCFF). The station is the second of three to be opened in the state by Clean Energy as part of the statewide initiative.

“Marco Henry and Yellow Cab have a long standing history of commitment to operating CNG fleets and they are dedicated to the expansion of alternative fuels in fleet services. We are pleased to be partnered with them as they once again make history,” said Andrew J. Littlefair, president and CEO of Clean Energy. “Adopting natural gas fuel for public taxi use, together with the deployment of new ADA-compliant CNG taxi vehicles, and making the infrastructure available to all vehicle and fleet operators spotlights Bloomfield as a hub for a new energy future in Connecticut.”

“We commend Marco Henry for his dedication and support in his continued efforts to reduce imported oil and helping clean the air with a commitment of over 100 natural gas taxi cabs serving the public in the Greater Hartford area,” said Craig Peters, Coordinator of Capitol Clean Cities. The Yellow Cab Company has been a stakeholder with Capitol Clean Cities of Connecticut since 1998.

A public/private partnership, the CTCCFF is a coalition of forces and resources, featuring all four Connecticut Clean Cities Coalitions working together under nearly $13.2 million of funding from a U. S. Department of Energy Grant, American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Project partners are providing over $16 million in non-federal cost share to the project. The Greater New Haven Clean Cities Coalition, Inc. (GNHCCC), together with more than 30 partner organizations initiated, organized and is managing the  building of a state-wide system that will eventually get 269 alternative fuels vehicles on the State’s roads through incremental funding and providing fueling capability for 21 additional fleet vehicles and the supporting infrastructure for vehicle deployments as part of the CTCCFF.

 Glastonbury’s Green Initiatives Program Expands

With New Compressed Natural Gas Fast-fill Fueling Station

GLASTONBURY, CT—(October 26, 2011) A ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10:00 a.m. today at Glastonbury’s new fast-fill Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) station to service an expanding Town fleet of CNG powered sedans and shuttles.   On hand for the ribbon-cutting ceremony will be Steve Cassano, State Senator; Jason Rojas and Prasad Srinivasan, State Representatives; Representatives from Congressman Larson and Congressman Courtney; Susan Karp, Chairman Glastonbury Town Council; and, Richard J. Johnson, Glastonbury Town Manager.

A leader in embracing and employment of sustainable practices, the Town of Glastonbury partnered with Capitol Clean Cities of Connecticut and the Greater New Haven Clean Cities Coalition on the Connecticut Clean Cities Future Fuels Project, a statewide public-private initiative deploying Alternative Fuel Vehicles and Fueling Stations across the state. The Glastonbury project includes a new fast-fill CNG station, 12 CNG powered sedans and two CNG powered shuttle buses. The Town is receiving $488,200 from the U.S. Department of Energy and is providing $571,628 in non-federal share to complete the $1.06 million dollar project.

“We are glad the Town could partner with Clean Cities to expand our CNG fueling capacity and fleet. The continuing expansion of our Green Initiatives Program is important to the Town and with the new fast-fill CNG station, cost savings will be realized quickly,” said Richard J. Johnson, Town Manager of Glastonbury.

Air and Gas Technologies built the new station in Glastonbury at 300 Welles Street, which is co-located on the same property as the Glastonbury Senior Center.

“We are excited about this new fast-fill fleet station and fleet in the Town of Glastonbury,” stated Lee Grannis, Coordinator of the Greater New Haven Clean Cities Coalition and recipient of the USDOE grant.  “This station represents the continuing commitment of the Town to cleaner transportation options and the addition of 14 CNG vehicles to the Town fleet will have an impact on reducing the use of petroleum and save the town money too,” Grannis added.

“We are thrilled to watch the Town of Glastonbury continue as a leader in the Greater Hartford area, promoting the importance of clean natural gas fuel and vehicles.  Their commitment to clean energy is evident in their newest project which replaces their slow-fill station with a fast-fill station enabling them to expand their natural gas fleet.  They are a wonderful example to other municipalities of how dedication to and belief in alternative fuels validates the positive results of using Alternative Fuels.” stated Craig Peters, Coordinator of the Capitol Clean Cities Coalition.

Compressed Natural Gas Fueling
Station Opens at Metro Taxi
in West Haven for Public, CNG-powered Taxi Fleet

Opening Will Feature New Metro Access CNG-powered Wheelchair-friendly Taxis

WEST HAVEN, CT—(September 26, 2011) A ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10:00 a.m. today at Metro Taxi’s West Haven headquarters will celebrate the city’s first public access compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling station. On hand for the ribbon-cutting ceremony will be Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro, J. Brendan Sharkey, Connecticut House Majority Leader, West Haven Mayor John M. Picard, City of New Haven’s Department of Services for Persons with Disabilities Director Michelle Duprey, and Connecticut Clean Cities Future Fuels Project (CTCCFF) visionaries including Metro Taxi and Clean Energy.

A nationally known, award-winning, innovative leader in the taxi business, Metro Taxi introduced Connecticut’s first wheelchair-accessible taxi in 2009, and will soon be home to a fleet of purpose- built, wheelchair- friendly, ADA compliant, low emission taxis known as the “MV-1” ready to serve the Disability Community.

“We are adding CNG-powered taxis to our fleet to reduce overhead fuel costs, significantly lessen harmful emissions for the environment, provide the public with a modern cab that has expanded head, leg, cargo-room, and reduce our overall dependency on foreign oil,” said Bill Scalzi, president and CEO of Metro Taxi. “The fuel cost savings enabled us to purchase the new MV-1 Wheelchair Accessible Taxi. This business decision is a win/win for everyone.”

The new fuel station will serve anyone in the public operating a CNG vehicle. In addition to the MV-1, Metro Taxi will launch into service CNG-fueled Ford Transit Connects and Honda Civics. By year’s end, Metro Taxi will deploy 110 new CNG taxis as part of its ambitious project to do its part to decrease its dependence on foreign oil, reduce pollution, and improve the environment. Metro Taxi expects to gradually increase its CNG fleet over time as part of its normal replacement cycle.

By 2012 the CNG fleet is expected to displace about a half-million gallons of gasoline per year, according to Scalzi. That equates to about 10 million pounds of Carbon Dioxide, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. In addition, replacing 110 gasoline taxicabs with new clean-burning CNG cabs will remove more than 2,500 tons of greenhouse gases annually. “The gains to the environment and energy independence will increase exponentially,” said Scalzi.

Clean Energy built the new station at Metro Taxi’s fleet facility at 65 Industry Drive, between Boston Post Road and Derby Avenue, as part of the CTCCFF. The station is the first of three to be opened in the state by Clean Energy as part of the statewide initiative.

“We are pleased to extend our natural gas fueling services to this region and to the state,” said Andrew J. Littlefair, president and CEO of Clean Energy. “Adopting clean, domestic natural gas fuel for public taxi use, together with the deployment of new ADA-compliant CNG taxi vehicles, makes West Haven a pacesetter for the new energy future in America.”

“We are excited about this new fleet and station in West Haven at Metro Taxi,” stated Lee Grannis, Coordinator of the Greater New Haven Clean Cities Coalition and recipient of the USDOE grant. “This station represents several ‘firsts’ in our area; the first fleet/public access CNG station in West Haven, the first taxi fleet deployment of more than 100 CNG vehicles in our state, the first commercial taxi fleet deployment in the United States for the new ADA compliant MV-1 taxi built by Vehicle Products Group, the first CNG version Ford Transit Connect deployment in the state by Interstate Ford of Hartford, and, the first Clean Energy station to open in Connecticut,” Grannis added. The taxis will serve the metropolitan cities of New Haven and Bridgeport and over 30 surrounding cities and towns.

“I hope that Metro Taxi’s leadership will inspire others to invest in new technologies – fueling our state’s economic growth and clean energy future,” said Kevin Lembo, Connecticut State Comptroller.
