The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), in partnership with the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology, Inc. (CCAT), is pleased to announce that funding is now available for a “Hydrogen Refueling Infrastructure Development” (H2Fuels Grant) Program to promote the use of fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), reduce air pollution and move us closer to meeting our long term climate goals.

The H2Fuels Grant Program will award up to $840,000 to a qualified vendor to establish, operate and maintain a retail hydrogen fueling station preferably within 5 miles, but no more than 8 miles, of Interstates 91/95 interchange in New Haven, Connecticut. Any proposed location must also provide FCEV drivers direct and easy access to/from the major highways. Funding will be provided on a reimbursement basis, with a partial payment being made after the fueling station is operational, and the final payment once the station is available for retail use.

Meeting Connecticut’s clean air and climate goals calls for an energy future that depends on expanding the use of zero emission vehicles. Supporting the development of an economically viable hydrogen vehicle fueling network is critical to the market penetration of FCEVs in Connecticut and throughout the Northeast. The development of hydrogen infrastructure in the state is consistent with the Northeast Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle Fleet Deployment Plan. The Plan lays out a near term market opportunity for the deployment of 445 light duty vehicles and 32 fuel cell electric buses, all supported by 4 to 5 hydrogen refueling stations in the state. The proposed station in the New Haven area would complement the hydrogen stations in Wallingford and Hartford, CT.

Businesses, located within 8 miles of the I-95/I-91 interchange, with direct or easy access to the highway, which are interested in being a host site for the proposed hydrogen fueling station, are encouraged to contact CCAT or DEEP.

All communications on the H2Fuels Grant program should be in writing and submitted to Paul Farrell Attn: Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, Air Bureau, 79 Elm Street, Hartford, CT 06106-5127 or by e-mail to paul.farrell@ct.gov.

Proposals are due by April 30, 2018. If you are interested in supporting Connecticut’s energy future by establishing and operating a hydrogen refueling station in the New Haven area and setting the stage for economic development opportunities related to FCEVs, please review important program information at www.evconnecticut.com.
